Opening a new school is about much more than creating classrooms and facilities; it is about building a community where children and families feel a sense of belonging from the very beginning. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Charlotte Grieves, Head of Primary at Horizon English School Town Square, to discuss the journey towards the school’s opening in August 2027.

Charlotte shared how the leadership team is already meeting prospective pupils and their families through the Parent Experience Centre, taking time to understand each child’s interests, needs and anxieties. She highlighted the importance of creating a smooth transition into a new school, with opportunities planned for children to become familiar with the campus, their teachers and the wider school community before the doors officially open.

For parents considering a new school, Charlotte encouraged families to look beyond facilities and brochures and spend time getting to know the leadership team, asking questions and understanding the school’s values and approach to education. She emphasised that choosing the right school is about finding a place that aligns with a family’s values, where children feel safe, happy and confident to take risks, while parents are actively involved in their educational journey.

Charlotte also reflected on the importance of recruiting teachers who bring excellent teaching, warmth and a willingness to help shape the culture and traditions of a new school. Ultimately, she explained that success will be measured by whether children, families and staff are excited to return each year and continue being part of the community.

This conversation offers valuable insight for families considering a new school and highlights the thought, preparation and personal connections that go into building a school community from the ground up.
