What a British curriculum looks like in Dubai in 2026–27
The British curriculum is known for its academic rigour and structured progression towards terminal exams: typically GCSEs at age 16 and A Levels at age 18 with other pathways such as BTECs also available. It is also known for its breadth and balance with a wide range of subjects studied up until age 14 when students select subjects to take qualifications in.
Dubai’s curriculum of choice
The British curriculum is the largest single curriculum in Dubai’s private school sector and it’s growing. While many of Dubai’s KHDA rated outstanding schools are British curriculum, what varies enormously between schools is how the British curriculum is delivered: class sizes, the quality and experience of UK qualified teaching staff, how well the curriculum is adapted for a genuinely international, multilingual student body and the strength of pastoral care alongside academics. KHDA continues to raise the bar on inspection standards across Dubai, particularly around inclusion and wellbeing provision, which means the gap between schools that meet the letter of the curriculum and schools that build genuine flourishing around it is becoming more visible to parents. At the same time, Dubai’s school age population keeps growing, especially in newer residential communities, which is driving demand for schools in areas that previously had limited options. Families researching now, a year or more ahead of enrolment, are increasingly common, particularly for schools opening or expanding, where early registration can matter for place availability and year group formation.
What makes a school outstanding beyond academic outcomes?
Academic outcomes matter and there are a few interdependent questions worth asking. Ask how the curriculum is adapted, not just adopted. A genuinely international cohort needs a curriculum that reflects and includes their backgrounds, not a straight transplant from a UK classroom. Ask about staff retention and how teachers are developed, since consistency in the classroom matters. Ask what “pastoral care” means operationally at the school; is it a framework with real structure behind it (safeguarding, transitions, wellbeing, student voice) or a line in a prospectus? And ask how the school defines success beyond exam grades; the strongest British curriculum schools now talk about the kind of person a student becomes, not just the grades they leave with.
Horizon is known for all of this and more; KHDA outstanding since 2017 with a reputation for a rare combination of academic achievement as well as student happiness. Our students love school, succeed and are ready for the next stage of their education. Get in touch with our admissions team to find out about what we’re building ahead of our August 2027 opening.
