Wellbeing is the weather, flourishing is the climate
At Horizon, the goal is flourishing but what does this mean?
First, it is about academic success. When you choose a premium British school, you should expect your child to achieve top grades. But lots of students get top grades so what matters is what else students take with them from their school experience.
Then there is wellbeing. We all want our children to be physically and mentally healthy along with the wisdom and resilience to guard both in a complex world.
But where many schools stop there, we keep going. Because wellbeing is like the weather; sometimes it is better and sometimes it is worse. Those ups and downs are part of life. Flourishing is about long term happiness, meaning, relationships and accomplishment. Children flourish when they understand the world and their place in it, when they appreciate the beauty in the world, when they stand up for what is right even when that’s the harder option. Flourishing is the belief that one can succeed and having the agency to take action.
The question is, can schools help children to flourish? And they absolutely can. Horizon English School has been doing this for years. We design the day so that children experience positive emotions, so that they feel a state of flow where time passes quickly because they are enjoying what they are doing, where they develop strong relationships with peers and adults, where they find meaning in life and where they achieve success. When you compound this over time, it’s not just children that flourish, but families too.
If you are looking for the right school for your family, I would love to continue the conversation. Come and visit us at our Parent Experience Centre in Town Square for a chat, meet the team and learn more about Horizon Town Square ahead of our opening in September 2027.
